Handprint Turkeys

The boys have been after me to make more crafts with them, so we made handprint turkeys! These make a cute decoration for the fridge or a card to grandma and grandpa.

You will need:

  • Washable craft paints
  • Paper
  • Paint brush
  • Willing hands
  • Googly eye, optional

Directions:
1. Paint the palm of the hand brown. DM Tip: You want a good coat of paint, but not so much that it squishes out when you press their hand on the paper.
2. Paint each finger a different color.
3. Gently press hand down on a piece of paper. DM Tip: Gently press all around the top of the hand and on each finger to help the paint transfer. It's ok if the fingers are spread out, you can add more in a little bit (#5).
4. Let the picture sit while you wash off hands.
5. Paint a finger (I found pointer to be easiest) another color and place in between existing finger "feathers". Repeat until you have the desired amount of feathers.
6. Let dry a little.
7. Use the end of the paintbrush (or a marker/pencil/crayon) and paint on an orange beak and legs.
8. Paint on a red wattle.
9. Lastly, attach a googly eye (or you can paint it on too). I used a drop of wet paint to attach the eye, but glue works really well too.
10. Let dry and enjoy!

Gobble, Gobble...A Pumpkin

These make a great Thanksgiving craft and decoration. It's also a great way to keep the kids busy on Thanksgiving Day while you get food ready!

For this craft you will need:
Directions:
1. Wrap a brown pipe cleaner around the pom pom ball. The pom pom ball will be the head and the pipe cleaner the neck. Twist any extra around the neck part of the pipe cleaner or trim off.
2. Glue the googly eyes to the pom pom ball and set aside to dry.
3. Stick the feathers in the back of the mini pumpkin.
4. Wrap a small piece of the red pipe cleaner around the base of the head/neck for the wattle.
5. Stick the neck/head pipe cleaner in the front of the pumpkin.

Turkey Mums

You will need:

  • Pot of mums (DM Tip: the ones with shorter stems work the best, as these are going to be the turkey's feathers)
  • Hot glue gun/hot glue sticks
  • Foam sheets (brown, red, yellow or orange)
  • Scissors
  • Googly eyes

Directions:
1. Cut out pieces to form the turkey's body. DM Tip: I have a stencil below that works for 4-5" pots.
2. Use the hot glue gun to glue the turkey pieces to the pot.
3. Place and enjoy!

DM Alternatives: Use peel and stick foam sheets and googly eyes for younger kids.

Paper Plate Turkey

My kids are still at the age where they love making crafts and showing them off on the fridge. Holidays are a perfect time to let their creativity flow, and Thanksgiving is no exception! If you have brown plates, or pre-paint the plates, this is a great way to keep the kids entertained while waiting for dinner.

For this craft you will need:
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Snack and Dinner size paper plates
  • Brow craft paint and paint brush
  • Craft glue
Directions:
1. Paint the backs of the paper plates brown and let dry.
2. Glue the small plate to the top of the large plate to form the head and the body of the turkey. If the plates won't stick together well (i.e. too much gap), you can place two staples in the middle of the head and cover with the waddle and beak.
3. Cut out wattle shape from red construction paper. Glue on wattle.Cut out feet shape from yellow construction paper. Glue on feet and let dry.
4. Cut out beak shape (triangle) from yellow or orange construction paper. Glue on beak.
5. Cut out feet shape from yellow construction paper. Glue on feet and let dry.
6. Cut out pilgrim hat shape from black construction paper. Glue onto top of head.
7. Cut out a strip or buckle shape from the yellow construction paper and glue onto brim of hat.
8. Draw on eyes or glue on googly eyes.
9. Cut out different colored feathers from construction paper, glue on and let dry.

I have some stencils below, if you would like to use them to make the turkey!
