Grandparent's Day

Did you know Grandparent's Day is an actual holiday? A woman named Marian McQuade wanted to encourage family to visit elderly relatives and for younger people to spend time with and learn from the elderly. She began lobbying and eventually a couple senators introduced a resolution for the holiday. First, West Virginia declared a Grandparent's day in 1973.  In 1978, President Carter signed in National Grandparent's Day as a holiday. It is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Did you know there is also an official Grandparent's Day song? It is called A Song For Grandma And Grandpa by Johnny Prill.

Ways to Celebrate:
  • Visit grandparents and great-grandparents
  • Make cards and send them to out-of-town relatives
    • Send a family picture with a card
    • Make and send a picture card
    • Make and send a photo album. Cut out pieces of cardstock, punch out holes and tie with ribbon to make a book. Glue in photos and send to grandparents! Write little notes next to the pictures (i.e. Johnny's first day of school, Family Reunion 2012). If you have any vintage photos, scan them, print and use in the photo books (for example, weddings, baptisms/christenings, etc.)
  • Send flowers, candy, or cookie deliveries to out of town loved ones.
