The Easiest Ice Cream You'll Ever Make!

My kids can sometimes have a bit of a sweet tooth. I have no idea where they got it from...

The good news is that they love their fruit (and vegetables) too, so we made a really healthy and easy "ice cream" together.

Bernardo is learning how to use a sharper knife, so I had him peel and cut the bananas. Once he was done, he slid the slices over to Higgins who placed them on the covered cookie sheet. I then placed them in the freezer and made the ice cream about an hour later. The boys loved helping and I think it made them even more excited to eat the ice cream.

Time: 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours

You will need:
  • Bananas, ripe. We used about 5 bananas and had plenty of ice cream. I think it made about 10-12 scoops.
    • DM Tip: The boys and I each had 3 scoops before I cut them off for the night. We still had some left over ice cream and I didn't want it to go to waste. I placed the left over ice cream in popsicle molds to enjoy later!
  • Strawberries, optional
  • Chocolate chips, optional
  • Wax paper and cookie sheet
Directions:
1. Peel and slice bananas. Place on a wax paper covered cookie sheet and place in freezer.
2. If you are making strawberry banana ice cream, slice strawberries and freeze as well.
3. Once the fruit is completely frozen, place bananas in a blender or food processor. DM Tip: I started with the blender, but found it got stuck a lot. Once I switched to the food processor, it was a lot easier and faster.
4. Blend until bananas are smooth.
5. If making strawberry banana ice cream, add strawberries into the blender/food processor when the bananas are pretty smooth. I liked having little chunks of strawberries in the ice cream, so I didn't chop the berries up too much.
6. Scoop out of blender/processor and place in bowls or on cones.
7. If you want to make the banana chocolate chip ice cream, remove from blender/processor and place in a bowl. Use a spoon and gently mix in the chocolate chips.

DM Tips:

  • When it comes out of the blender/processor, it will be like a soft serve ice cream. If you like a harder ice cream, make scoops and place in a bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
  • If you have popsicle molds, these make great treats for later. When the boys ask for the "ice cream popsicles we made", I don't have any guilt giving it to them since it is only bananas and strawberries.
